Automatic Reading of BIC and Tank Containers


APDL and AllRead will set up 5 additional accesses in the Port of Leixões, to obtain traceability of vehicles, containers and train plates, in locations that were not possible until then, in order to streamline and dematerialize processes.

About the Leixões Port Authority (APDL)

The Leixões Port Authority (aka APDL) is the second most important port in Portugal, responsible for over 25% of the country’s international trade. The port is one of the most competitive logistics hubs in the country, handling around 19 million tons of goods a year.


The Challenge

In this collaboration, ADPL relied on the AllRead software due to the need of  reading BIC-type containers and tank-containers that circulated through the different accesses of its facilities. These containers passed at a speed of up to 60 km/hour on its highways and railways.

All this traceability was possible to be carried out using only one security camera, preinstalled in each access.


The Solution

From this collaboration, we installed our software on APDL’s systems, allowing the client to avoid the high hardware and implementation costs that other traditional OCR solutions require.

With a simple and agile implementation, we have been able to use our software at the client’s facilities, providing readings of up to 90% accuracy and with real-time integrations in APDL’s systems, using a single camera, instead of the common costly and complex infrastructures than other providers require.

In addition, AllRead got to obtain better metrics than other traditional OCR solutions with little use of hardware.

Using the AllRead reading solution, APDL now has the possibility of bringing an agile and non-CAPEX-intensive reading solution to other accesses of Port of Leixões.


Next steps

Now, APDL and AllRead will collaborate in a project at 5 additional accesses in the Port of Leixões, that will allow the port to obtain the traceability of license plates, containers and trains in places where it was not possible before.
