There are currently around 20 million containers in the world, transiting through thousands of ports and terminals. Port charges are levied whenever a container passes through one of these hubs, and tax and customs administration collect the taxes. OCR-based tracking systems have been installed to control and track the ins and outs of containers.
Port authorities invest millions to install camera equipped gates, with sensors to activate the capture once the vehicle passes by. Because the OCR technology needs a precisely framed picture of the targeted text, identifying the container IDs or truck license plates slows down the crossing, creating bottlenecks at entrance and exit gates. Even then, experts consider the error rate around 5%.
